The hang glider

One of the first flying machines, a hang glider, was developed at the beginning of the 19th century by Albrecht Ludwig Berblinger, also known as "the tailor of Ulm". Unfortunately, in the summer of 1811, there was a not very successful demonstration in the presence of King Frederick I. 

The mobile fire ladder

Conrad Dietrich Magirus invented the mobile fire ladder in Ulm in the mid-19th century. In 1866, he founded his own company to manufacture ladders and fire engines. Today, the company Magirus GmbH produces firefighting technology in Ulm.

Hollywood comes from Ulm!

Universal City Studios in Hollywood would not exist without Ulm, because the world's first film industry was invented by Carl Laemmle, who came from Laupheim, south of Ulm.

Design made in Ulm

Otto "Otl" Aicher is considered one of the most influential German graphic designers; he came from Ulm and his developments are considered the basis of corporate design worldwide. As a co-founder of the Ulm School of Design, he designed Lufthansa's corporate image, among other things. Using radically reduced pictograms, Aicher's team designed a new sign language that was universally understood.

Setra - the name stands for "self-supporting" bus body. The successful bus brand now belongs to Daimler Truck AG and is based in Neu-Ulm.
